Adam: What do you like doing in your free time, Nicky?
Nicky: Me? Oh, you know, the usual. I watch TV, go shopping, go to the gym …
Adam: Do you read the newspaper?
Nicky: No, I usually read magazines.
Adam: And do you like gardening?
Nicky: Gardening? I don’t know. I don’t have a garden!

Jack: Are you going to do anything interesting this weekend, Harry?
Harry: Yes, we have tickets for a Shakespeare play at the National Theatre.
Jack: I can’t stand Shakespeare!
Harry: But, Jack, he’s the greatest writer in the English language!
Jack: For you, maybe. I prefer more modern plays by Harold Pinter or Alan Bennett. My favorite is Pirandello.
Harry: That’s too bad. I had an extra ticket for you …, but you aren’t going to need it, are you?
Jack: Oh … no, I guess not.

Amy: So do you like riding horses, Ben?
Ben: Of course I do! It’s the best job in the world.
Amy: Isn’t it very dangerous?
Ben: Well, it can be.
Amy: But you risk your life every day!
Ben: Well, not every day. Only when we ride in horse races.
Amy: Why did you decide to do it in the first place?
Ben: Because I love being outside all day, and I love horses!

Narrator: Listen to Mike talk about his hobby when he was a child.
Mike: When I was a child, I loved reading. My parents said I “ate” books because I often read two or three a week, but they were quite happy with my hobby. As an adult, I can understand why. My school friends all liked playing football or going fishing, and they often came home dirty. Their parents had to do a lot of laundry! Mine never did. My dad often worked nights, too, so I think that my quiet hobby was perfect when he was asleep during the day. I also learned a lot from all the books I read and found a way to be happy by myself.
It wasn’t unusual for me to read for hours in my favorite places: on my bed or on the sofa in front of the fire. But that was only when it was cold or rainy outside. When the weather was better, and especially on sunny days, I liked to take my book of the moment for a walk. It was like my pet. There were two places I really loved. They were perfect spots to sit down and read. They both had wonderful views and were really quiet. One was in the local park, on a little wooden bench beside the river. The other one was under a large oak tree in the middle of a field three miles from my home. When I think about these places now, I always smile.
