A:   Hello, can I help you?

B:   Ah, yes please. I’m looking for a present for my mum. It’s her birthday next week.

A:   Let me see. Ah, here’s a very lovely painting. What do you think?

B:   I really like the colour but it’s too expensive for me. What else have you got?

A:   I know, how about his old guitar: you can’t play it anymore, but it would look very good on the wall in your living room?

B:   My mum already has a guitar. She likes old things, you know, like stuff from the past. She thinks modern furniture is horrible!

A:   Then this Italian glass lamp is the perfect gift! I found it in a shop in Spain last year. It’s fifty years old and very special. It still works too.

B:   Oh yes. The painting was very beautiful, but this table lamp is the best for Mum!

A:   Fine. So, that’s thirty pounds.

B:   Oh, I haven’t got the money now. Can you keep the lamp until next week? I’ll ask my dad if he can come with me and get it next Tuesday after school.

A:   No problem, I’ll see you next Tuesday.

16   You will hear a mother talking to her son. Where are they going to eat on Sunday?

A:   How about going to the new pizza restaurant near the station on Sunday?

B:   But aren’t grandma and granddad having lunch with us at home?

A:   That’s on Saturday: it’s your father’s birthday, don’t you remember? We’re having a surprise dinner party with them.

B:   Oh, you’re right. Then we can go. I can’t wait: I love pizza!

17   You will hear two friends talking. When does the football match start?

A:   Hurry up, Amanda. It’s already quarter past six and the match begins in 45 minutes.

B:   Don’t worry, Sam. Roger and his father are going there by car. I asked him if he can drive us there, too. So we’ll be there by six forty-five.

A:   Good. So we’ll have time to buy some drinks as well before it starts at seven.

18   You will hear a girl, Sue, talking to her friend. What is she doing in the afternoon?

A:   Hi, Sue. Where have you been?

B:   I was in the park with my aunt’s dog. I always work as a dog-sitter on Saturday mornings.

A:   Cool! Shall we go to the cinema after lunch?

B:   OK, but we’ll have to go to the 2.30 show because I’m having dinner at my grandfather’s this evening.

19   You will hear a man and a woman talking about buying a TV. What size do they want to buy?

A:   Cindy, how about this TV on the second shelf? It looks perfect for the kitchen.

B:   I don’t know. It looks as large as the one we have in the living room… it might be too big for the cupboard near the fridge.

A:   Maybe you’re right. Let’s get a smaller one. We need more space to cook in the kitchen.

20   You will hear a boy talking to his friend. What is he going to buy to his grandmother?

A:   What shall I get my grandmother for her birthday?

B:   Well, she really loves shoes. Why don’t you buy the pair near the gloves in that shop window?

A:   I’m not sure about her size…

B:   Then I’m sure she’ll love these: she always wears jewellery, doesn’t she? And she has a necklace that goes with them, too.
