Listening Exercises A2 – The Weekend

1.

A:   So how was your weekend, Don?

B:   Well, I wanted to go dancing with my girlfriend but she was too tired to go out?

A:   So what did you do?

B:   We just stayed home and watched TV.

2.

A:   I had a great weekend.

B:   What happened?

A:   I met this really terrific girl and I think she likes me.

B:   Really?

A:   Yeah, we’re going out next weekend.

B:   All right!

3.

A:   What did you do last weekend?

B:   Umm, I spent most of the time at the gym.

A:   How come?

B:   Well, I plan to enter a bodybuilding competition next month.

A:   Gee, I didn’t know you were a bodybuilder.

B:   Yeah. Want to see my muscles?

A:   So, what was your weekend like?

B:   Not very good. My brother came over.

A:   Yeah?

B:   Well, he’s got three young boys. I spent all weekend playing computer games with my nephews. Now I’m exhausted.

A:   I’ll bet!

A:   Did you have a nice weekend?

B:   Mmm. Not too bad.

A:   Did you do anything special?

B:   Well, I saw a really good movie.

A:   Who with?

B:   Oh, I don’t think you know him. It’s this really good-looking guy I just met.

A:   Did you have a nice weekend, Teresa?

B:   It was okay.

A:   So what did you do?

B:   Well, I met some friends on Saturday and we rented a video.

A:   How about Sunday? Did you see the World Series on TV?

B:   The what?

A:   The baseball game.

B:   Oh. No, I was too tired. I slept most of the day.

A:   You’re kidding! You missed a really great game.

A:   So how was your weekend?

B:   Oh, I went to see that new science-fiction movie downtown.

A:   Oh, yeah? How was it?

B:   Boring. I think I fell asleep in the middle of it!

A:   What was your weekend like?

B:   Awful!

A:   How come?

B:   I went to the beach for the weekend. But it was cold and wet the whole time.

A:   Oh, yuck!

A:   So, what did you do over the weekend?

B:   Oh, I stayed home and read.

A:   Sounds pretty boring.

B:   Not really. I finished reading a terrific novel. Want to borrow it?

A:   Maybe some other time.

A:   How was your weekend?

B:   I went to a great outdoor concert and met some really interesting people. And guess what? I met this guy who loves tennis. We’re going to get together for a game on Saturday.

A:   So you’re not playing tennis with me?

B:   Oh, well, umm-no,sorry!

A:   Did you do anything interesting over the weekend?

B:   Well, I had to study for an exam.

A:   All weekend?

B:   Yeah. It was pretty awful.

A:   When’s the exam?

B:   Today.

A:   Well, good luck.

B:   Thanks. I’ll need it.

A:   Did you have a good weekend?

B:   Yeah, I had a great weekend. I was out both Friday and Saturday night with friends but now I’m so tired. I won’t do that again for a while.

A:   Too bad. I was going to ask you out next weekend. Oh, well.

I had a really great weekend. I didn’t have anything to do on Saturday afternoon so I went to the mall. I went into a department store to look around. They were having a contest. All you had to do was write answers to some easy questions about pop music and put your answers in a box. Then they pulled out three names for a prize. And guess what? Mine was the first name they pulled out. I couldn’t believe it. And it’s a terrific prize. A weekend for two in Las Vegas!

2.

Saturday morning, I got a phone call from an old school friend. I haven’t seen her for a long time. She was one of my closest friends in high school, but she moved to Los Angeles to work. She was in town for four days so she invited me to a restaurant for lunch. We had such a pleasant time together. She was telling me about her job in Los Angeles. It sounds really interesting. She works for a movie company and she has to find places where they can film movies – you know, places like restaurants, hotel lobbies, parks, and streets.

My brother and I wanted some exercise on Sunday so we decided to go on a nature walk. There’s a big park near the town where there are supposed to be wonderful wild birds and butterflies. We took a bus there and walked along a forest trail for about four hours. It was pretty tiring because it was a really hot day. The worst thing was, we never saw any wild birds or butterflies! I don’t think we’ll go there again.

4.

I went to my friend’s birthday party on Saturday night. I don’t always enjoy going to birthday parties because you often have to play stupid games and things. Well we did have to play all sorts of stupid games, but I really enjoyed myself. I guess it was because the people at the party were all interesting. And there was good music, too. Somebody brought along some dance music and everyone had a great time dancing. I didn’t get home until after 2 a.m.

1   I watched TV and played computer games all weekend. I had a great time because there was a big soccer match on the Spanish channel. It was really exciting. I just love soccer. And my new computer game was fun. It’s very challenging.

2   I had a terrific weekend. I went out to dinner with Rob-you know, the guy in history class. We went to a disco and danced all night long! It was a lot of fun!

3   Well, I was going to catch up on my schoolwork, but I spent most of the weekend playing soccer. I play with a neighborhood team. The rest of the weekend I just hung out with my friends.

4   Well, my friends and I were going to go rollerblading” in the park, but the weather was bad. So we went to the shopping mall instead. I got this jacket. Isn’t it great? Then we went out for dinner.

5   I visited my sister and her family. We had a great home-cooked dinner. Then I took the kids to see the new animation film. We all loved it.

B:   It was pretty disappointing. I wanted to go to a movie on Saturday night with my girlfriend, but she got sick, so I rented some videos and watched them at home-it was really boring.

A:   That’s too bad. What did you do on Sunday?

B:   Well, I wanted to play tennis with my brother. But as soon as we got ready to go, it started to rain. We didn’t want to play tennis in the rain, so we stayed home and played computer games instead.

A:   That sounds okay.

B:   Not really. I hate computer games. I think they’re boring.

A:   Oh, well, I hope next weekend is more exciting.

B:   Thanks. Me, too.
